Question:

Can I start with a small system and expand later to a large system?

Answer:

If you started with the small system you may need to upgrade to the unlimited Multiplexing software. The software is readily configurable to accommodate system alterations. As for the hardware, the system can start with as little as one station and be expanded up to the system maximum of 1,024 stations by simply plugging in the additional hardware as required. Each multi-drop RS-485 line will handle up to 32 stations. The first serial card will handle up to 256 stations (8 RS-485 lines), and each subsequent card will handle an additional 256 stations.
